Google just announced about a new project they are working on. Its the Google Chrome OS. Google is amazed by the feedback of their web browser Google Chrome with over 30 million users. Now, Google thinks that the Operating Systems today are not Web-friendly or Web-optimized. So, Google is making an Operating System called Google Chrome OS which will be focused on Web users.

Google Chrome OS will be a light-weight and Open Source OS targeted for netbooks. The source code will be available in around the last quarter of 2009 where as the OS will be available to consumers in the end of 2010.

  • @RickA: There have been several fake screenshots of Chrome OS with just a photoshopped wallpaper ans some OS customizations like taskbar skins. Fpr the design part, nothing can be said now as Google can come up with a very basic design or an unexpected impressive design with would have impact on users like OS X. But again, the design is unknown. We will get to see it later this year.

As of the Chrome OS, it is a linix distro with Google Chrome and optimized for running web apps. The OS will have customizations like a set of Chrome wallpapaers and maybe dock styles, but nothing more than that. As of the devices are concerned, it will run on all devices on which linux can run (Desktops, Notebooks, Netbooks, and other portable devices).

    And the excitement? - It's a Google product :)

  • Jash,

Why is everyone waxing quixotic about Google's OS when no one has actually seen it? And when their top designer just headed for the door after claiming that although Google is technologically superior, they lack in the design department? That would hold a problem for many users who are in love with OSX and now the new Windows 7. Both, from a design perspective are quite appealing.

Although Google's OS will be able to be run on multiple devices, which I am sure is the goal, is this anything more than a modified, button downed distro of Linux when all is said and done? If it is, why are we so excited about this?
